  43. The  OWL  Portfolio  Price Loader is designed  to  help  you  maintain
  44. current and historical prices for stocks, bonds and mutual funds  that
  45. you are tracking using the OWL Personal Portfolio Manager (OPPM).  The
  46. program  works by updating OPPM's price data using price  quotes  that
  47. have been downloaded from an on-line data service.  OPPL accepts price
  48. data  downloaded  from  Prodigy,  CompuServe,  GEnie  Dow  Jones  News
  49. Retrieval Service, America Online, Farpoint BBS and Just Data.

  60. Changes
  61.   
  62.   Version 2 incorporates the following changes and enhancements.
  63.   
  64.   1.  Mouse support  has  been added.  Double  click  the  left  mouse
  65.       button  to  select a menu item.  The right mouse button  cancels
  66.       the current menu.
  67.   2.  OPPL now  remembers the file name of the last file  successfully
  68.       loaded  and  defaults to this file name the next  time  OPPL  is
  69.       run.
  70.   3.  OPPL now  remembers the last quote date successfully loaded  and
  71.       warns  you  if you enter a date span which is earlier than  data
  72.       which has been previously loaded.
  73.   4.  Menu selections  using the keyboard must  now  be  confirmed  by
  74.       pressing  the  return key.  The earlier version ran  the  option
  75.       when the first letter of the option name was pressed.
  76.   5.  Ticker symbols  are no longer case sensitive i.e.(if  your  OPPM
  77.       data  base  contains  the symbol "Ibm"  and  the  download  file
  78.       contains  "IBM", OPPL see these as matching ticker  symbols  and
  79.       accept the record.
  80.   6.  OPPL  is   now   compatible   with   quotes   downloaded   using
  81.       Compuserve's  WinCIM.  Earlier versions supported  only  DosCIM.
  82.       Also  the handling of data records that do not contain an update
  83.       date  has been modified (please read the Compuserve CIM  section
  84.       below).
  85.   7.  OPPL now supports loading Compuserve's weekly composite quotes.
  86.   8.  The browse  function  has been enhanced  with  scroll  bars  and
  87.       mouse support.
  88.   9.  OPPL is now compatible with quotes downloaded from Farpoint  BBS
  89.       in a ".PRN" format.
  90.   10. OPPL is  now  compatible with quotes downloaded from Just  Data,
  91.       an Australian data service.
  92.   11. OPPL is  now  compatible  with quotes downloaded  using  America
  93.       Online's portfolio feature.

  96. Installation
  97.   
  98.   The  OPPL program and data files must be installed on the same drive
  99.   and  directory as the OWL Personal Portfolio Manager (OPPM) program.
  100.   Copy   OPPL.EXE,   OPPL.DBF,  OPPLCFG.DBF  and   OPPL.HLP   to   the
  101.   drive\directory where OPPM.EXE is installed.  Example:  if  you  are
  102.   currently using version 5.0 of OPPM and it is installed on  C:\OPPM5
  103.   use the following commands:
  104.   
  105.        COPY OPPL.EXE C:\OPPM5
  106.        COPY OPPL.DBF C:\OPPM5
  107.        COPY OPPLCFG.DBF C:\OPPM5
  108.        COPY OPPL.HLP C:\OPPM5

  111.                              Running OPPL
  112.   
  113.   Before  running  OPPL  be sure to review the applicable  section  of
  114.   this  guide  on downloading quotes.  OPPL has specific  requirements
  115.   for  file  formats and file contents which must be met to avoid  the
  116.   possibility of introducing invalid data into your database.
  117.   
  118.   Once  you  have captured a file containing closing quotes,  you  can
  119.   run  OPPL to import these prices into the OPPM price database.  OPPL
  120.   accumulates   daily  quotes  into  OPPM's  composite  weekly   price
  121.   database as follows.
  122.   
  123.   1.  If a  weekly  price  record  DOES  NOT  exist  within  the  OPPM
  124.       database  for  the  date being loaded, a  new  price  record  is
  125.       created  and  the  import record's HIGH, LOW, CLOSE  and  VOLUME
  126.       data are transferred to the new record.
  127.   2.  If  a weekly  price record DOES exist within the  OPPM  database
  128.       for  the date being loaded, the import records high and low  are
  129.       compared  to the existing high and low and the existing record's
  130.       high  and  low  are  updated if necessary; the  import  record's
  131.       volume  is  added  to  the  existing volume;  and  the  existing
  132.       closing price is updated to the import record's closing price.
  133.   
  134.   To  run OPPL set your default drive\directory to the drive\directory
  135.   where OPPM and OPPL are installed and type "OPPL".  Example:
  136.   
  137.        C:
  138.        CD \OPPM42 OPPL
  139.   
  140.   The  program  has  6 options which are described  in  the  following
  141.   paragraphs.
  142.   
  143.  
  144. Import Closing Quotes
  145.   
  146.   This  option reads a file containing captured closing quotes, checks
  147.   the  ticker  symbols  against  your  OPPM  database  and  creates  a
  148.   temporary  database of prices.  NOTE:  Only those quotes  that  have
  149.   ticker  symbols  matching the ticker symbols in your  OPPM  database
  150.   are  accepted.  In addition, any quotes that are not within the date
  151.   span that you specify will be ignored.
  152.   
  153.   WARNING:   Before  selecting this option, be sure that  the  current
  154.   setup  shown  in  the  upper right corner of the  screen  shows  the
  155.   correct  file type for the file you will be loading.  See  Set  File
  156.   Format below.
  157.   
  158.   After  selecting  this  option, enter the  name  of  the  file  that
  159.   contains  the closing quotes you want to load.  Be sure  to  include
  160.   the  full drive and path specification when entering the file  name.
  161.   Once  you have correctly entered the file name, enter the date  span
  162.   you  want  loaded.  DO NOT INCLUDE DATES THAT HAVE  BEEN  PREVIOUSLY
  163.   LOADED.   Loading closing quotes for the same date  more  than  once
  164.   will cause invalid volume data in your OPPM database (the volume  of
  165.   shares  will be too high because the repeated day's volume  will  be
  166.   added  more  then  once).  Closing quotes are not committed  to  the
  167.   OPPM  price  database until you exit the program.  Multiple  closing
  168.   quotes files can be imported by re-selecting this option.
  169.   
  170.  
  171. Browse Closing Quotes
  172.   
  173.   This  option allows you to view the closing quotes which  have  been
  174.   read  and  accepted by the program using the Import  Closing  Quotes
  175.   option.  This allows you to preview the imported data before  it  is
  176.   committed to the OPPM price database.
  177.   
  178.  
  179. Abandon Closing Quotes
  180.   
  181.   If  you  made an error and imported the wrong file or specified  the
  182.   wrong  date  span,  you  can  abandon  all  closing  quotes  in  the
  183.   temporary  database  by selecting this option.   This  will  prevent
  184.   erroneously  loaded closing quotes from being written  to  the  OPPM
  185.   Price database.
  186.   
  187.  
  188. Set Import Format
  189.   
  190.   Before  using  the Import Closing Quotes option, check  the  current
  191.   setup  in the upper right corner of the display to insure that  file
  192.   format is properly set.  If not, use this option to select the  type
  193.   of file you will be importing.
  194.   
  195.  
  196. Set Quote Year
  197.   
  198.   Since  the  closing quotes output by GEnie and Compuserve are  coded
  199.   with  the month and day only, the program assumes that the  year  of
  200.   the  quotes is equal to the year set in your system.  If this is not
  201.   the  case,  select this option to specify the year of the quotes  to
  202.   be imported.
  203.   
  204.  
  205. Commit Data & Exit
  206.   
  207.   This  option  will  commit all closing quote data in  the  temporary
  208.   database  to the OPPM price database and exit the program.   If  the
  209.   temporary  database is empty (no files loaded or  you  selected  the
  210.   Abandon  Closing  Quotes option after loading  your  closing  quotes
  211.   files) the program will simply exit to DOS.
  212.   
  213.   
  214.                        DOWNLOADING STOCK QUOTES
  215.   
  216. OPPL  supports  loading stock, bond and mutual fund quotes  downloaded
  217. from  Prodigy,  CompuServe, GEnie Dow Jones  News  Retrieval  Service,
  218. America  Online, Farpoint BBS and Just Data.  The program has specific
  219. requirements  for  download  file  formats  and  contents  which   are
  220. described in the following paragraphs.
  221.   
  222.  
  223. Compuserve CIM (Compuserve Information Manager) Quotes
  224.   
  225.   Current stock quotes can be obtained from Compuserve when using  the
  226.   Compuserve  Information Manager (DosCim or WinCim) by selecting  the
  227.   "Quotes"  option  under the services menu.  The Compuserve  software
  228.   permits you to predefine the ticker symbols for the quotes you  want
  229.   to  retrieve.   Once  you have defined a group  of  ticker  symbols,
  230.   select  "Quotes" followed by "Get All" to display the current quotes
  231.   for  all  predefined issues.  To download these quotes to your  hard
  232.   disk  select "SAVE" or "SAVE AS" under the file menu.  We  recommend
  233.   that  you save the file in your OPPM directory (double click on  the
  234.   drive  letter  then  select the directory  where  OPPM  &  OPPL  are
  235.   installed)  and  enter  a  file  name  other  than  the  default  of
  236.   "UNTITLED.TXT."
  237.   
  238.   WARNING:   Data  downloaded  using the  CIM  Services/Quotes  option
  239.   often contains an update time and not an update date.  Records  that
  240.   do  not contain an update date are assumed to be dated on the ending
  241.   date  of  the import time span that was entered.  Note:   OPPL  does
  242.   not support loading of Compuserve's Basic Quotes.
  243.   
  244.  
  245. Compuserve Weekly Quotes
  246.   
  247.   Compuserve  also provides historical weekly composite quotes  which,
  248.   though  a  premium service with a charge of 5 cents per  quote  plus
  249.   time  charges,  provides an excellent means of  back-filling  prices
  250.   for  an  issue that you have recently begun tracking.  (Balance  the
  251.   charge of $2.60 for 52 weeks of historical data against the time  it
  252.   would  take  to  extract and enter the data  from  newspapers).   To
  253.   obtain  weekly  composite prices go to the "Issue  Pricing  History"
  254.   section  of  Compuserve (GO PRICES).  Once you enter  this  section,
  255.   set  your communications program to begin logging data (Press F5  in
  256.   DosCim).  You will be prompted as follows:
  257.   
  258.      Issue:  (Enter the ticker you want historical prices for)
  259.      (D)aily,  (W)eekly, (M)onthly ?:  (Enter "W" for weekly)
  260.   
  261.   Next  you  will be asked to enter the "starting date  or  number  of
  262.   periods  from  the last pricing data." Enter "52" to  get  the  most
  263.   recent  52  weeks of data.  After the data has been  displayed,  you
  264.   will  be  prompted for another issue.  WARNING:  if  you  choose  to
  265.   capture  historical  quotes for another  stock,  the  time  span  or
  266.   number  of periods you previously entered will stay in effect.   You
  267.   will  not  be prompted to reenter this data.  Once you have acquired
  268.   the  desired  weekly  composite prices, signal  your  communications
  269.   program  to close the log file and type "/EXIT" to leave  the  Issue
  270.   Pricing History section.
  271.   
  272.  
  273. Prodigy
  274.   
  275.   Current  quotes  can be obtained from the Prodigy Quote  Track  page
  276.   (Jump  -  Quote Track).  Within quote track, you must establish  one
  277.   or   more  "Tracks"  containing  the  ticker  symbols  you  want  to
  278.   download.  Prodigy's tracks are limited to 15 issues per track.   If
  279.   you  are tracking more than 15 issues we suggest using the Hard Disk
  280.   track.   The  hard  disk track is limited to 50  issues  per  track.
  281.   Consult  Prodigy's help screens for more information on establishing
  282.   tracks.
  283.   
  284.   After  establishing your track(s), select the report  setup  option.
  285.   Setup  your  report  options to output the report  to  a  "delimited
  286.   file"  (  *.CSV  format).  If you will be importing quotes  to  OPPM
  287.   from  several Prodigy sessions at one time, select the append option
  288.   in  the  report  setup.   Alternatively, if you  will  be  importing
  289.   quotes to OPPM each time you download, select the overwrite option.
  290.   
  291.   WARNING:   When downloading quotes from prodigy, be sure to download
  292.   "CURRENT QUOTES" and NOT "CLOSING QUOTES."
  293.   
  294.   Prodigy  permits  you  to save report setups  for  either  a  single
  295.   session  or for all future sessions.  To save time in future Prodigy
  296.   sessions,  we  suggest that you make this setup  permanent  for  all
  297.   prodigy  sessions.  Once your quote track and report setup has  been
  298.   saved, it is not necessary to modify these for future sessions.   To
  299.   download  quotes,  open your quote track (FILE  MENU)  and  run  the
  300.   report option (FILE MENU).
  301.   
  302.  
  303. Genie
  304.   
  305.   Closing  stock and mutual fund quotes can be obtained using  GEnie's
  306.   closing quotes page.  Type "M270;1" at any GEnie page to go  to  the
  307.   closing  quotes  page.   Before selecting  the  option  to  retrieve
  308.   closing  quotes,  set your communications program to  begin  logging
  309.   output  to a file.  Enter up to 30 ticker symbols of the stocks  and
  310.   mutual  funds  you  want to retrieve.  After  retrieving  up  to  30
  311.   quotes  the  "Enter Ticker Symbol(s)" prompt will reappear  and  you
  312.   may  enter additional ticker symbols until you have retrieved quotes
  313.   for  all of the stocks and mutual funds you are tracking.  Once  you
  314.   have   retrieved  all  of  your  closing  quotes,  set  your   modem
  315.   communications program to stop logging.
  316.   
  317.   NOTE:  depending on your modem communications program, much of  this
  318.   process  can  be  automated through the use of  scripts  or  command
  319.   files.   Check the documentation of your communications program  for
  320.   details.
  321.   
  322.   The  ticker  symbols for stocks and mutual funds  you  are  tracking
  323.   using  OPPM  must match the ticker symbol, type and class  shown  in
  324.   the  GEnie  closing  quotes.  This is entered in the  ticker  symbol
  325.   field in OPPM as:
  326.

  337.   Note that all mutual funds have a type of "X".  This type should  be
  338.   ignored and NOT included in the OPPM ticker symbol field:

  346. Dow Jones News Retrieval Service (DJNRS)
  347.   
  348.   OPPL  supports  quotes  retrieved from Dow  Jones  News  Retrieval's
  349.   current  quotes  (//CQ),  historical quotes  (//HQ)  and  Dow  Jones
  350.   Averages (//DJA) databases.
  351.   
  352.   //HQ:   The historical quotes database allows you to retrieve up  to
  353.   one  year's  worth of daily quotes for stocks.  After selecting  the
  354.   HQ  database set your communications program to begin logging  to  a
  355.   new  file.   Enter  the  symbol of the stock you  want  to  retrieve
  356.   quotes  for  followed by "P1" e.g.(IBM P1).  DJNRS will  display  12
  357.   days  of  quotes for the selected stock.  Each time  you  press  the
  358.   return key, the preceding 12 days of quotes will be displayed  until
  359.   a  full  year's  of  quotes  have been displayed.   After  you  have
  360.   retrieved   all  the  quotes  you  are  interested  in,   set   your
  361.   communications  program  to  stop  logging.   Note,  you  may   save
  362.   historical quotes for multiple stocks to a single log file.
  363.   
  364.   //CQ:   The  current quotes database allows you to retrieve  current
  365.   quotes  for  stocks  and  mutual  funds.   After  selecting  the  CQ
  366.   database set your communications program to begin logging to  a  new
  367.   file.   Enter the symbols of the stock or mutual funds you  want  to
  368.   retrieve  current quotes for.  You may enter up to 5  symbols  at  a
  369.   time  separated by a space.  DJNRS will display current  quotes  for
  370.   each  selected  security.   You may enter more  symbols  as  needed.
  371.   After  you  have retrieved all the current quotes you are interested
  372.   in,  set your communications program to stop logging.  Note, do  not
  373.   save  current quotes for multiple dates in the same log file.  Since
  374.   the  DJNRS CQ database does not display the date, OPPL is unable  to
  375.   distinguish the date that the quote applies to.
  376.   
  377.   //DJA:   The  Dow Jones Averages database allows you to retrieve  up
  378.   to  one  year's  worth  of daily quotes for the  various  Dow  Jones
  379.   Averages.   After selecting the DJA database set your communications
  380.   program  to  begin logging to a new file.  Enter the symbol  of  the
  381.   average  you  want to retrieve quotes for followed by "P1"  e.g.(DJI
  382.   P1).   DJNRS  will  display  12  days of  quotes  for  the  selected
  383.   average.  Each time you press the return key, the preceding 12  days
  384.   of  quotes will be displayed until a full year's of quotes have been
  385.   displayed.   After you have retrieved all the quotes for a  selected
  386.   Dow  Jones Average, set your communications program to stop logging.
  387.   Note,  do  not save different averages to the same log  file.   OPPL
  388.   reduces  volumes  of  Dow Jones Averages by a factor  of  10.   When
  389.   loaded,  DJA  volumes are in units of thousands instead of  hundreds
  390.   as shown in the DJA download file.
  391.   
  392.  
  393. America Online
  394.   
  395.   Current  or  Closing stock and mutual fund quotes  can  be  obtained
  396.   using  the Display Portfolio feature of America Online for  Windows.
  397.   After  signing  onto America Online, click on "Go To"  in  the  main
  398.   menu (top of screen) then click on "Stock Quotes."
  399.   
  400.   If  you  have not already entered ticker symbols for the issues  you
  401.   wish  to  track,  enter each ticker symbol then  click  on  "Add  to
  402.   Portfolio."   The  ticker  symbols you add  to  your  portfolio  are
  403.   retained  for  all future sessions so you only need  to  enter  them
  404.   once.
  405.   
  406.   To  display  current prices for issues in your AOL portfolio,  click
  407.   on "Display Portfolio."  Next click on "Save Portfolio" and enter  a
  408.   file  name  (e.g.,  PORT.TXT) where the prices will  be  saved.   By
  409.   default,  the file will be saved in the "\WAOL" subdirectory.   When
  410.   you  import the quotes into OPPM using OPPL, you will need to  enter
  411.   the full name of the file (e.g., C:\WAOL\PORT.TXT).
  412.   
  413.   Quotes  downloaded  in  this  way do not  contain  volume  or  daily
  414.   high/low data and as such, the volume loaded into OPPM will  be  set
  415.   to  zero  and  the  high/low will be set equal  to  the  current  or
  416.   closing quote (depending on the time of the download).  The date  of
  417.   the  data  is  assumed to be the date of the beginning of  the  date
  418.   span you entered.

  420.  
  421. PRN-5 Format (Farpoint BBS)
  422.   
  423.   The  PRN-5  format  is  an  ASCII -- comma delimited  format  having
  424.   records  of  the  following form:  date,high,low,close,volume  where
  425.   the  date is in the form "yymmdd" and prices are in decimal  format.
  426.   For example, a record for 30 October 1993 would be written:
  427.   
  428.        931030,27.5,26.125,27.25,30643
  429.   
  430.   All  records  in  a  given PRN file are for a single  issue  (ticker
  431.   symbol).   The Farpoint BBS provides free (except for  the  cost  of
  432.   the  phone  call)  downloading of historical stock quotes  in  PRN-5
  433.   format.   Data  is available for most stocks listed  on  U.S.  stock
  434.   exchanges.   When  downloading from this service you  will  download
  435.   one  file  for  each  stock  using one  of  several  supported  file
  436.   transfer  protocols such as XModem.  The phone number  for  Farpoint
  437.   BBS is (312) 274-6128.

  440. Just Data (Australian Stock Exchange)
  441.   
  442.   OPPL  will  import  daily stock quotes downloaded from  "Just  Data"
  443.   data  service in Australia (Just Data, 26 Bellevue Street,  Highgate
  444.   Hill, Q 4101, Phone 008 777 972 or (07) 899 2148).  Downloaded  file
  445.   data should be in the following form:
  446.

  453.   The  above  format  is exactly as the data is downloaded  from  Just
  454.   Data  and  should  not be modified by any of Just  Data's  available
  455.   data  conversion utilities.  If multiple days of data are  contained
  456.   in  a  single file, the price records for each day must be seperated
  457.   by a Header/Date record.
